FILE 01 / 07 · SENATE PUBLIC SAFETY · SB 1414
She had the gavel. She used it to water the bill down.
In 2024 Sen. Shannon Grove brought a simple bill: make it a straight felony to solicit or buy sex from anyone under 18. Aisha Wahab chaired the committee that would not let that sentence stand.
Campaign still
“To force these amendments on me in front of survivors, to water this down to avoid 16 and 17-year-olds.”
“16-year-old and 17-year-olds did not matter.”
Her spin
She will say she later supported other trafficking bills (SB 14) and that the final chaptered version moved.
The record
The attack is not that she “supports child sex trafficking.” The record is narrower, and worse for that reason: the chair used the gavel to make 16- and 17-year-olds harder to protect than the author wrote.
A Member of Congress votes on federal crime bills. CA-14 should know how she used the last gavel she had.
