The bill was bipartisan, with dozens of co-authors, and grieving parents packed the dais. This was not an obscure committee stunt. This was mothers in the room. [CBS News][CapRadio]

The bill had the votes to pass the Senate if it reached the floor. Killing it in committee was the only way to stop it without a public no. [CBS News]

It had to clear Wahab’s Public Safety Committee first. That is where popular crime bills go to die in California. [CapRadio][CBS News]

Committee Democrats, including Wahab, used a no-vote-recorded maneuver. Abstain. The bill dies. Nobody’s name sits next to “NO.” That is how you hide from the mothers. [CBS News]

Later, Democrats tried a weaker alternative package to head off a tougher citizen initiative. Police unions called it a “weak attempt to appear to address the public safety crisis.” The parents had already seen the real vote. [CalMatters]

She said she was disappointed that women and children in Afghanistan are blocked from school. Then she named the policy. “The United States needs to practice diplomacy. And regardless of which group is in power, we should be exercising diplomacy and having a relationship.” The group in power is the Taliban. [Democracy Now]

She said the relationship might steer “them” toward human rights, women’s rights, and civil rights. Then she said the quiet part. Afghanistan has “a unlimited amount of resources that the United States needs to… partner with to have contracts with.” [Democracy Now][Amu TV]

She did not stop at Kabul. She called Afghan groups that are not the Taliban “deeply, deeply failed and misguided,” said they do what is right for themselves, and said that “even under the support of the United States, that these warlord groups literally raped the country.” [Democracy Now]

Kabul treated the interview as an opening. Amu TV led with her line that Washington should pursue diplomacy “regardless of which group is in power.” Responsible Statecraft, reporting from Kabul, wrote that the same interview “led to immediate condemnation,” and that Afghans who had just celebrated her win “turned against Wahab, labeling her a Taliban apologist.” [Amu TV][Responsible Statecraft]

The Afghanistan Women’s Movement Network condemned the remarks in a resolution. Formal relations with the Taliban, they said, would hand the group political credibility while women are still locked out. Their line: “Being of Afghan descent does not give anyone the privilege of representing Afghan women, and holding political office is not a licence to bargain over their suffering.” [Zan TV]

October 7, on a debate stage in Dublin, Melissa Hernandez repeated it: she would not have “communications with the Taliban like my opponent.” Wahab did not take the sentence back. She called Hernandez’s remark “fear-mongering” and “hate speech,” and told KTVU the district was “disgusted in seeing these types of hate.” [The Mercury News][KTVU]

The theory in the referral: Wahab abandoned the state Senate race and left the committee account open so money a federal campaign cannot accept could keep moving. She filled that account with checks she was not allowed to spend on a race for Congress, then sent the money where it could be used on that race. [Wahab Files]

The letter’s ledger. On May 5, 2026, her state Senate committee gave the Alameda County Democratic Party $60,000. On May 14 it paid her mail printer $37,177 for the congressional race. On June 24 it sent another $5,000 while the party was already campaigning to put her in Congress. The letter puts the total at $102,177. [Wahab Files]

Supervisor Nate Miley had already filed a verified complaint with the Federal Election Commission on the $60,000 transfer. TJ Singh signed the separate letter asking the Alameda County district attorney to open a criminal case. [Wahab Files][Dossier / complaint reporting]

The letter says Wahab signed the campaign reports on May 20 and July 15 under penalty of perjury, certifying filings for an office she was not running for. It says that in California, doing that knowingly is a felony. That is the allegation. It is not a charge, and it is not a finding. [Wahab Files]

Singh said the part her party will not. “If I did this, I would be investigated. If you did this, you would be investigated. A candidate for Congress should not get a free pass.” [Wahab Files]

Tawab Wahab, her adoptive father, wrote: “Call ICE on the Mexican girl she don’t belong here.” In a second post he wrote that “this country belongs to higher people, not a fruit picker’s daughter…we don’t want a congresswoman from Mexico,” accused Mexicans of crime and corruption, and said it was “time to get rid of them and send them back to Mexico.” [Melissa Hernandez for Congress]

Rep. Linda Sánchez, chair of BOLD PAC, said the comments were posted on Wahab’s own campaign page. The campaign deleted them. Sánchez’s line: “Deleting something is not the same as denouncing it.” She asked Wahab two questions in public. Did her father call for Hernandez’s deportation? Rep. Zoe Lofgren, chair of the California Democratic congressional delegation, called the comments “racist, plain and simple.” Hernandez has lived in Dublin for more than 30 years. Lofgren said Wahab cannot control every relative, and then said the part that matters: “Senator Wahab must denounce these deeply hurtful comments.” [Melissa Hernandez for Congress]

Alameda County Supervisor Elisa Márquez: “Calling ICE on a Latina elected official is not a political disagreement. It is a threat.” Hayward Councilmember Francisco Zermeño said it was “not right at all.” Former Union City Councilmember Jim Navarro told her that silence “can easily be interpreted as indifference,” and asked her to denounce the remarks. Five days later, Migrant Insider reported she still would not say he was wrong. The account carried her father’s name. The photo matched the man she had called, on her own campaign page in 2023, her “toughest critic, but also my biggest cheerleader.” The outlet said she had offered two statements and zero condemnations. Nancy Pelosi, Pete Aguilar, and Zoe Lofgren — chair of the California Democratic congressional delegation — pressed her to stand down. These were not Republicans. These were her own party’s leaders. [CBS Bay Area][The Guardian]

Lofgren’s account, on video, released the night before the August runoff: Wahab said to Lofgren and her staff, “What’s in it for me?” [CBS Bay Area]

Lofgren said that answer “caused me to question her fitness for service in the House.” A senior Democrat called her unfit on camera. That is the validator. [CBS Bay Area]

November 3 is the rematch, on new lines that add roughly 26,000 Dublin voters. She still wants two more years after being called unfit by her own side. [Wikipedia]

April 2026, Indivisible Tri-Valley forum. Question: did Israel commit genocide in Gaza? Wahab: “Yes.” She did not hedge. She did not walk it back in the room. [Jerusalem Post]

On Hasan Piker’s livestream she said she supported ending all U.S. military aid to Israel and would have voted for the “Stop the Bombs Act,” while adding that humanitarian aid still mattered to her. Piker is not a mainstream Democratic validator. She chose that show to lock the aid-cutoff position in front of an audience that wanted to hear it. [Times of Israel]

In the Senate she was one of only three senators to vote against SB 1287, which would strip state funding from campuses that ignore antisemitism or boycott Israel. That is the roll call after the slogan. [Times of Israel]

United Democracy Project / AIPAC-aligned groups spent an estimated $6.3–$6.4 million in the special. She called the opposition “pure racism and prejudice” and posted a spreadsheet of pro-Israel donors. An AIPAC spokesperson called that an attempt to stigmatize Jewish donors. [J. SB 403 (2023) would have added “caste” as a protected class under ancestry in California civil-rights and employment law. That sounds like a civil-rights bill until you hear who it was aimed at. [CalMatters]

Wahab’s pitch was a hidden hierarchy in the tech workforce. Hindu and Indian-American groups heard something else: a bill that would brand their community. [CalMatters]

She was appointed Senate Housing Chair and aligned with the PHIMBY / social-housing faction, not the people trying to add supply. That is the ideology. Then came the vote. [CalMatters]

SB 79 (Wiener) would upzone around transit. Wahab called it a “sweetheart deal” and a “giveaway,” and said skipping strict affordable set-asides “perpetuates socioeconomic segregation, which is de facto racial segregation.” That is how you talk when you want the bill dead. [CalMatters][Reason]

She had consultants write a report that recommended “no” instead of amendments. Her own Democrats overrode the chair and sent the bill out. She later voted for a negotiated final version and talked like she had improved it. Getting rolled is not leadership. [CalMatters][Reason]

Sophia Mason was 8 years old, dead after years of abuse. Wahab, a former foster youth, forced a joint legislative audit of Alameda County child welfare. The audit was ugly: missed referrals, hour-long hotline waits, 59% of emergency cases downgraded without documentation. State intervention. A $12 million settlement. This part is her strongest work. Miley filed an FEC complaint alleging: on or about May 5, 2026, Wahab’s state Senate committee (FPPC 1457054) sent $60,000 to the Alameda County Democratic Central Committee; beginning May 21 the party’s federal committee started independent expenditures supporting her congressional campaign.
